Put a body on it and register it as the body. In states without inspections this might work. No sir this is not an RZR just a heavily modified 2001 Beetle.

I want one! I wonder what other bodies you could put on there. Fiesta RZR?

Apparently the US vehicle safety standards are something that the rest of the world should aspire to. Or maybe not.

Pretty sure you wouldn’t even have to go through all that effort in SC, probably let you register as is, judging by the cars I see on the road here.

It varies, unsurprisingly , state to state. The state I live in, South Carolina, requires no inspection whatsoever; some of the cars I see on the road are down right terrifying.

ND has special plates for side-by-side vehicles. They are both considered off road vehicles and normal cars. Gotta have insurance lights, etc and can go anywhere except the interstate.

Yeah, Some states have yearly inspections. Michigan on the other hand inspects nothing, ever. Not safety , not emissions, nothing. Check out David Tracy’s cars if you don’t believe me. I mean as a car enthusiast it’s nice but some of the cars I see on my commute are absolute death traps

Inspection is the least of the issues. In Oz, you have to demonstrate that the engineering of anything you build that you want to register complies with the Australian Design Rules...before you can even register it for road legal driving in the first place. Doesn’t matter what state you are in...

This sort of shenanigans completely undermines any US person on this site claiming that US safety requirements are something the rest of the world should aspire to...

In wi you can get one road legal too, but you can’t go on roads with a speed limit of more than 45 like a moped. Most towns you can drive around side streets without any lights or anything just like a 4 wheeler or dirt bike.

For factory-built vehicles , the US and Europe are the gold standards in cars and aircraft.

The thing about a lot of the US is that once you’ve bought it, anything goes...and if you want to build a plane in your garage, go nuts!

Oz has “ design rules” ? I don’t know, I’ve seen the Mad Max films, some of that stuff is iffy :)

You can crash in a random Chinese car, I’ll crash in a random Murkan car, we’ll see who fares better.

When laws are dumb, gotta be creative.

It still amuses me that quads are road legal in Germany, I’d have one as a commuter rig if that was the case here in dumdumland where you need an endorsement for a Vespa, but a 42' motorhome or 10 foot tall compensator brotruck is just fine by fogging a mirror (even worse now than license testing is privatized, less developed world here we come).

Yeah and they claim it’s because of bad emissions and low safety, but would a sidexside really be worse than a rusty 90s economy car with no muffler

Or even just an ordinary older motorcycle , or something like an old low displacement mosquito- fogger scooter?

When it comes to such regulations, there’s often no logic or accountability.

In Nebraska, you can get a VIN assigned to a car as a make “Assembled” if you reuse some major component from an existing vehicle:

An Assembled Vehicle is a vehicle originally manufactured or assembled less than 30 years prior to application for a certificate of title and which is materially altered from its construction by the removal, addition or substitution of new or used major component parts unless such major component parts were replaced under warranty by the original manufacturer of the vehicle.

A major component part is defined as one of the following §60-2601 :

Engine (Motor) - with or without accessories

Transmission

Nose - the portion of the body from the front to the firewall when acquired or transferred as a complete unit ( §60-125 )

Frame - the portion of a vehicle upon which other components are affixed, such as the engine, body or transmission ( §60-116 )

Body - the portion of a vehicle determining its shape and appearance and is attached to the frame but does not include the box or bed for a truck ( §60-105 )

Rear Clip – means two or more of the following, all dismantled from the same vehicle: ( §60-128 ) a quarter panel or fender; floor panel assembly; trunk lid or gate.

Cowl – means the portion of the vehicle house the firewall, windshield and instrument panel.

I think it’s a neat law. Lets the people who are serious about hot rodding or building custom vehicles have a chance to drive them legally on the road.

Honestly, the people who are willing to jump through those hoops are not the ones that other drivers on the road will have to worry about.

I live in a state with no state inspections, and I have yet to be convinced that a yearly inspection will do anything to significantly improve the safety of other cars on the road.

Sure, there are some dangerous cars driving around, but every accident I’ve seen was caused by the driver, not by the condition of the car. If anything, we need better driver training and better testing instead.

And while they’re at it, include some basic vehicle awareness into the driver training. Let them know why bald tires are bad. Let them know why suspension clunks shouldn’t be ignored.

It’d be far cheaper and more effective in the long run to educate the drivers, not force them to pay for an inspection every year.

Agreed. I’m just bemoaning the horrible cars I need to share the road with. Honestly if the police enforced the laws we already have on the books regarding that stuff I think it would improve greatly around here at least. I mean I’ve seen a car that was t-boned so hard it crabbed down the road being used to regularly commute, bent rims that cause a car to shake violently, enough smoke coming from a car that I’d be amazed if it weren’t on fire and the police don’t give it a second look.

Unfortunately your solution is logical and preventative and that’s just something we don’t do very well as a country

In Finland we have yearly inspection for car/trucks/buses but not for tractors/quads/motorcycles/mopeds. But police can still order you to go to be inspected if something really suspicious is spotted on the road.

They are road legal in Utah, just not Highway legal.  No need for the deception.  Though it sure looks great and keeps the dust outta your eyes better than a skull face bandana.

No doubt there are some horrible wrecks of cars still being driven. Hopefully they’re very temporary, but you never know.

Personally, I’m more afraid of other drivers, not the cars they drive. Just this morning, I saw a car behind me try to cut the corner at a 4 way stop sign. That is, drive off road, to the right of the stop sign, intending to drive back onto the road as a right turn... all while I’m sitting at the 4 way stop with my right turn signal flashing and waiting for my turn to go.

It really feels like there’s an attitude of “Well, it worked, so why is it bad?” when it comes to drivers around here.  It scares me far more than any of the sketchy vehicles I see.

Yeah it’s the same here honestly. Passing on the right is pretty standard and I’ve seen a rash of people driving the wrong way down one way streets lately. I even saw an FCA test vehicle weaving about on the highway this week like he was texting then looking up and correcting. It’s chaos.

Last night, I was driving on a split 4 lane freeway in really light traffic, and while I was preparing to move over into the left lane to pass a slower vehicle, he swerved over into the left lane on his own. Presumably to let me pass him... in the right lane.

Funny thing is, this happened exactly as he passed a sign that read: “Keep right, except to pass”

I was pretty baffled...
